Edinburgh's Lord Provost has sent letters of condolence to Norway in the wake of the tragic killing of 76 people by right-wing extremist Anders Behring Breivik last week.

In his letter, sent on Saturday 25 July, the day after 76 lives were claimed in Oslo and on Utoya Island. the Lord Provost wrote:

"On behalf of the City of Edinburgh, may I express our shock and sadness on hearing about the atrocity in Norway.

"Our support and understanding is with you and Norway at this difficult time and if there is anything that we here in Edinburgh can do now or in the future, please let me know."

The Lord Provost and Council Leader Jenny Dawe also paid a visit to the Norwegian Consulate, where they signed the book of condolence, expressing their personal sorrow and sympathy following the massacre in Norway.
