The former casino, which was originally built as a dancehall in 1918, offers ballroom style in its main room and a more intimate, low-ceiling vibe in its second room underneath.

Although during the Edinburgh festival Ego was formerly a venue for the free comedy festival it primarily became known as a nightclub venue for its first decade.

In 1997, Ego announced that is going to become a live music venue.
