The world’s top explorers and daredevils are gathering under one roof for one night only to share their experiences of adventure with a live audience.More than 400 guests will be treated to 11 talks from some of the finest adventurers on the face of the planet during the ‘Night of Adventure’ event at the Vue Cinema in Edinburgh on 18th June 2012.
Speakers include Dave Cornthwaite who has broken five world records, crossed Australia on a skateboard, kayaked Australia's largest river and descended the Mississippi River by Stand Up Paddleboard; and Mark Beaumont who smashed the world record for cycling around the world by 81 days and who recently attempted to row the Atlantic in under 30 days.
Other exciting adventures that will be presented on the evening include visiting all 72 commonwealth nations that are competing at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth games by a challenging method of transport, competing in the winter Olympics and walking over 12,500km through eight countries!
Each speaker will be limited to just 20 slides, shown on the enormous cinema screen, to accompany their tales. The challenge for the speakers is that each slide will scroll forward automatically after just 20 seconds.
All proceeds raised on the night will go to the international children’s charity Hope and Homes for Children. The event’s organiser is Al Humphreys, one of National Geographic’s Adventurers of the year 2012. The 35-year-old Yorkshireman became the first man to cycle non-stop around the globe in 2005 and continues to take on crazy challenges to this day.
Al said: “The speakers at Night of Adventure may have travelled the world several times over and found themselves in some pretty hairy situations along the way, but their talks on June 18th could well be their biggest challenge to date.
“Once they begin there is no stopping or turning back - it’s fast, furious and extremely stressful for the speaker.
“The audience must be ready to be swept from adventure to adventure with only their beer and popcorn to steady their nerves.”
Tickets must be purchased in advance and are on sale now for just £14.
Al said the event aims to celebrate the spirit of adventure in all its guises and hopefully raise lots of money for Hope and Homes for Children.
“Most of the speakers have travelled the world and along the way they’ve witnessed both the best and worst aspects of human nature,” said Al.
“In societies where things spiral out of control, often children are the victims. That’s where charity’s like Hope and Homes for Children come in.
“It’s a world leader in transforming harmful and outdated childcare practices in Eastern Europe and Africa, so ‘Night of Adventure’ can think of no better cause to support.”
Doors to ‘Night of Adventure’ open at 6.30pm, with the first talk starting at 7pm. The event finishes around 9.30pm.
