Description

Cadenza's annual festive mix of old and new carols, and a chance for you to join in too!

For this year's programme Musical Director, Jenny Sumerling, has chosen another lovely selection of old and new, with carols composed or arranged by David Willcocks, John Rutter, Bob Chilcot, Peter Warlock and others. We celebrate the close of Britten 100 with his hauntingly beautiful A Hymn to the Virgin, we have jazz arrangements of well known carols, and Serenity, an atmospheric new arrangement for choir and 'cello based on O Magnum Mysterium by Norwegian composer, Ola Gjeilo - not to mention the "congregational hymns", and more! And there's a surprise - but you have to come to the concert to find out what it is!

The choir is joined by Michael Harris (organ) and welcomes back as our Special Guest this year the talented young Canadian 'cellist, Christian Elliott. Christian has previously appeared with Cadenza at Edinburgh Festival Fringe concerts, and we are delighted that as well as his own sets featuring music for 'cello by Faure and Saint-Saens, Christian will join the choir for Serenity and Rutter's Carol of the Magi.

Cadenza's most recent CD - Bright Star: Cadenza at Christmas -was very warmly received by critics, audiences, choral directors and composers, who praised the selection of music as 'refreshing' and 'a fascinating collection of carols offering new programme options for Christmas'. It was reviewed in Classical Music Magazine by Guardian Music Critic, Phil Sommerich, and received playtime on BBC Radio 3 and Classic FM. Copies will be available for sale during the interval and at the end of the concert - excellent Christmas presents! More at www.cadenza.org.uk

Cadenza is considered to be one of Scotland's finest and most exciting amateur mixed-voice choirs, critically acclaimed at Edinburgh Fringe Festivals and 'Carols by Candlelight' concerts in the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall and Usher Hall Edinburgh. The choir is regularly invited to perform at prestigious events such as headlining Historic Scotland’s Christmas concert in the Great Hall at Stirling Castle. The choir has also previously been broadcast on BBC Radio 3, Radio 4 and Radio Scotland.
