Description

Ever since 3000 or so cyclists rode on the Scottish parliament on Saturday 28 April 2012, cyclists of voting and non-voting age have been joining this annual, mass bike ride to spur the government on with improvements in  cycling infrastructure and safety in Scotland.

The original goal of the ride was to press politicians to keep alive its target of 10% of journeys by bike by 2020 at a time when around 1.6% of adults rode to work by bike.

By 2019, that figure had risen to 2.7%, according to Transport Scotland - a small increase which reflects the gradual improvement in cycling conditions on Scottish roads and the need to press for safer roads.

Many familiar names of the cycling world have leant their support to Pedal on Parliament. Champion cyclist Graeme Obree led the third mass protest ride from The Meadows to the parliament building at Holyrood.

Round-the-world cyclist Mark Beaumont has addressed the crowds at parliament, as well as media celebrities and sympathetic politicians.

The ride has inspired similar events in other Scottish cities.

In spite of the serious message, the organisers promise the event will be a fun day out for all the family, with a picnic at the end. The pace will be slow and easy for people to keep up – however little their legs may be.
