Description

Unlike the Loony Dook at South Queensferry, the Portobello or "Porty" Dook has always been a free event that takes place at Portobello's long, sandy beach. Participants meet at the foot of Bath Street, by the Espy and Beach House.

Portobello's Loony Dook is fairly informal, but has become an established New Year's activity with people typically gathering "to have a wee swim in the briney" at 1pm (tbc) on New Year's Day.

With the Loony Dook cancelled in 2023, Portobello's Dook is expected to be much bigger.

Participants will be clad in the usual wacky fancy dress outfits, raising funds for their various charities or just daring themselves. Even if you're not taking a dip it's a great spectacle.

Local businesses come out in support of the gathering with freebies and opening their doors to welcome you in for the usual coffee and cakery, including: The Boathouse, The Portobello Bistro, Miro's, The Espy, The Beach House, and The Dalriada.
