You are either with him or against him, but be warned that if you are with him he’ll undoubtedly put you in some very awkward positions. Doctor Brown’s Becaves has neither purpose nor sense of boundaries - but no matter how horrifying it gets, you’ll be unable to take your eyes off him.

The silence of the show’s first half makes his swings from painfully shy to disturbingly creepy all the more intense. The audience is divided on whether they like or loathe his stage persona, demonstrated well in his unfortunate front row participants: one eager, one terrified.

Doctor Brown exercises a strange power over the audience with his awkward movements and obscure subjects of interest. Even his costume is a wonder - a floral silk dressing gown and fez.

This is clowning taken to some seriously bizarre and debauched lengths. A thorough marmite show, I’d recommend it for those with a strong stomach and love of the peculiar.
