Digital Alchemy Earth Images by Richard Weston, is a hidden gem of an art exhibition!. This is part of the La Favorita Freestival.

Make your way to Macintyres, the Jewellery showroom on Frederick Street, to see a magical display of unique photographic prints - digitally enhanced images of beautiful gemstones.

"The fact is”, says Professor Richard Weston, “that nature is the earth’s greatest living artist. Always has been. Always will be.”

Weston, Professor of Architecture at Cardiff University, has long been fascinated with the “designs” found in nature. Using digital techniques, he specialises in highly magnified photographs of naturally-found minerals, rocks and plants.

These Earth Images of gemstones are transferred on to canvas and acrylic to create stunning prints. The swirling patterns and vibrant colours are completely natural, derived not from a painter’s palette, but from the exagerated layering, shape and structure of minerals.

This success of this artwork inspired him to make beautiful scarves, recreating the gemstone images onto satin silk: an innovative fashion concept indeed, winning the TV competition “The Next Big Thing” with Theo Pathetis (Dragons Den).

The prize was the opportunity to have these luxury accessories sold in Liberty of London, now also available at Harvey Nichols. During this exhibition, you can also order Weston silk scarves at a discounted price at Macintyres.

The exhibition of photography is complemented by the work of gemologist Stephen Turner, to show examples of Mother Nature’s most precious crystals, minerals and gemstones.
