Morningside

About the Area

If you are coming by road to Edinburgh from the South, Morningside is one of the first central urban areas that you encounter, where affluent suburban homes merge into the tenement flats of the city centre area.

Bruntsfield is to the North of Morningside, Craiglockhart and Merchiston are to the West, and Blackford Hill to the East.

Morningside was the location for Muriel Spark's The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie which may explain why it has an enduring reputation for being a little twee and snooty.

Morningside residences are a mix of Victorian terraced houses and single villas, while the main street has a variety of independent businesses and a local cinema, the Dominion cinema.
