Doug Allan: Freeze Frame – the Author’s Perspective

As part of Book Week Scotland, award-winning natural history photographer Doug Allan will be offering some unique personal insights into his experiences of filming animals in the wildest places on Earth. Allan also brings his skills as documentary filmmaker, diver, author and public speaker.

In his 30 year filming career, he’s been involved with more than 65 films, freelancing among others for the BBC, Discovery and National Geographic. He was principal cameraman on many prestigious award-winning series including , Operation Iceberg, Frozen Planet, Ocean Giants, Human Planet, Life, Planet Earth, The Blue Planet and Life in the Freezer and his diving experience covers more than 5000 hours underwater with over 650 dives under ice.

Winner of seven Emmys, four BAFTAs and five Wildscreen Pandas, Allan has twice won the underwater category in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year and has three Honorary Doctorates in recognition of his camerawork. He was recently made an Honorary Fellow of the prestigious Royal Photographic Society.

Allan will pick his most memorable moments and pictures from his book, Freeze Frame - The Adventures of a Wildlife Cameraman on Ice and explain why he felt the passion to write it in the first place, and its path to self -publication.

Allan has been captivating audiences across the UK with his sell-out tour, sharing his extraordinary filming challenges and successes. His legendary expertise in Polar Regions and other extreme environments make him a truly charismatic speaker. His enthusiasm for communicating his deep understanding of the biology of the animals and the psychology of film-makers make this presentation both engaging and inspirational. As Sir David Attenborough commented “Wildlife cameramen don’t come much more special than Doug”.
