The Edinburgh Fringe Society was set up in 1959 as a registered charity to advise and support anyone taking part in the Fringe and to provide information and ticketing services for Fringe participants and the public. It also promotes the Fringe through its website and the Fringe programme.

Kath Mainland took over the reins as Chief Executive of the Festival Fringe Society in 2009, after the Edinburgh box office fiasco at the Fringe 2008, which saw a 10% plunge in ticket sales and the resignation of Fringe Director Jon Morgan.

Orkney-born and bred, Mainland was administrative director of the Edinburgh International Book Festival from 2005 until 2009.

EdinburghGuide.com asked Mainland what a typical day is like for her when the Fringe kicks off in August.
