The neo-classic and contemporary, the Old and New Towns of Edinburgh, provide the romantic backdrop for a new low-budget film, written and directed by Tim Barrow.
Scottish filmmakers Lyre Productions had previous success with road movie "The Inheritance", which won the Raindance Award at the British Independent Film Awards and was nominated for two Scottish BAFTAs.
The Space Between was shot over just 17 days in and around Edinburgh, featuring streets, parks, rivers, beaches and landmark locations such as Calton Hill, Royal Mile, Arthur’s Seat, the Meadows and Cramond Island.
The city itself was the catalyst behind this passionate, life-affirming love story and tale of redemption. The cast includes stage actress Vivien Reid and comedian and actor, David Whitney, and director Tim Barrow puts himself in the frame as one of the characters.
A rich, eclectic soundtrack is performed by Scottish musicians Fiona Rutherford and Freemoore, blending classical piano, fiddle and blues, electronic and guitar-based tracks.
“We wanted to make a film placing Edinburgh centre stage - it’s a city of magic, where people find inspiration. Miracles happen here,” says Tim Barrow.
“The film to make before I die, had to be for my home city and had to be a love story.”
The premiere of The Space Between takes place on Thursday 10th March at the Filmhouse.
Exhibition
To celebrate and complement the premiere and forthcoming series of screenings around the city are two associated art exhibitions. A selection of stunning portraits and Edinburgh and Scottish landscape paintings by Halla Groves-Raines, who created artwork for the film, is on show at Flaubert Gallery, Stockbridge from 5 – 15 March.
Stills photographs from the film by Louise Lacaille will be shown at Henderson’s Gallery during March.
