Musselburgh PDSA shop team short-listed for volunteer award

Volunteers at the Musselburgh shop of leading veterinary charity PDSA have been short-listed for the PDSA Retail Volunteer Team of the Year Award for going above and beyond the call of duty. The winning team will be announced in the new year.

The team donate their free time at the PDSA shop located at 103 High Street. The shop is open six days a week and raises vital funds to provide free veterinary treatment in the local area.

Musselburgh Shop Manager, Gladys Johnstone, who nominated her team for the award says: “I am extremely pleased that the Musselburgh PDSA shop volunteer team have been short-listed for this award. They are exceptionally hard working and are dedicated to making sure our customers are satisfied.

“Most of my team have been at the shop since day one, which was nine years ago! They are really cheery, even when we’re busy and rushed off our feet. I am really proud to be their manager and hope they win the Retail Volunteer of the Year award as they deserve it.”

PDSA shop volunteers tackle a variety of tasks including sorting through donated goods, pricing and displaying stock and serving customers. The Musselburgh shop volunteer team is made up of 32 men and women, ranging in age from 15 to 83. Between them they ensure the shop is fully staffed, well stocked and that every customer leaves with a smile on their face.

2007 marks the fifth PDSA Volunteer of the Year Awards, which are supported by Volunteering England and Pets at Home.

Over 4,800 volunteers help in PDSA’s 181 shops, 47 PetAid hospitals, and fundraising groups. Every year, volunteers save the charity over £8.5m by donating their time for free. Notes to Editors:

2007 marks the 90th Anniversary of PDSA. Founded in 1917 by animal welfare pioneer, Maria Dickin CBE, PDSA is the UK’s leading veterinary charity.

The charity provides free veterinary care for the sick and injured pets of those unable to afford veterinary fees and promotes responsible pet ownership. It works through a UK-wide network of 47 PetAid hospitals and branches and some 349 contracted private practices (PetAid practices).
PDSA PetAid hospitals and branches will this year provide more than 1.8 million free treatments and more than 200,000 preventive treatments, such as vaccinations, neutering and microchipping. In addition, more than 36,000 pets are registered for PDSA-funded veterinary care through PetAid practices.

In 2007 delivery of PDSA PetAid services will cost more than £44 million. The charity is funded entirely by public support, mainly donations, gifts in wills and trading.

To be eligible for PDSA care, a pet owner must be in receipt of either Housing Benefit or Council Tax Benefit and live within the designated postcode catchment area of their local PDSA PetAid service.

Potential and existing clients can obtain more information on PDSA PetAid services by phoning 0800 731 2502.

PDSA operates 181 charity shops UK-wide and is supported by 4,800 volunteers.

The charity asks that it is referred to by its initials, PDSA, in all editorial rather than by its legal name The People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals.
