May-June 2008 book events at Blackwells

THURSDAY 8th MAY, 6.30pm – THE MULGRAY TWINS

Edinburgh is a city that produces
many crime writers from all walks of life, but in the Mulgray Twins we have perhaps one of
the genre’s most unlikely incarnations … The first twins in the world to write a
novel together in English, Helen and Morna Mulgray retired from teaching and
decided to create heroine DJ Smith and her sniffer cat Gorgonzola. Their first
novel No Suspicious Circumstances was
acclaimed as having “the kind of quirky charm and originality that made
Alexander McCall Smith’s No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series a best seller” (Daily Record).

We are delighted to welcome them to
Blackwell to discuss their new title Under Suspicion and to tell us about
what it’s like to be so inseparable you do everything together, including
writing!

THURSDAY 15th MAY, 6.30pm – TREVOR
ROYLE

We are fortunate enough to be joined
by award-winning and immensely popular military historian Trevor Royle. His last book The Flowers of the Forest was
shortlisted for the Saltire Book of the Year Award, and his latest work charts
the turbulent and fascinating history of The King’s Own Scottish Borderers, from
the regiment’s first days under William of Orange to their heroic deeds at the
Battle of Loos.

Royle has been praised for writing
books ‘that will be enjoyed by general readers as well as the military buff’ (Sunday Herald) and we look forward to
this chance to hear him in person.

THURSDAY 5th JUNE, 6.30pm – PETER
BROWN

We
are pleased to welcome Professor Peter
Brown
of McGill
University, Canada,
who is visiting Edinburgh to promote his new book Economics, Ethics
and International Relations
- a trenchant and timely analysis of the
ways in which the world’s economic systems need to be addressed if we are to
sustain the planet’s life. It is described as “a pioneering work in ethics and
economics for the new global era”, and this is a rare opportunity to hear from
an expert in the field who will appeal not only to economists but to anyone who
cares about our responsibility to the environment and who wants to hear a truly
innovative speaker.

All events take place at Blackwell
