Simon Green (aka Bonobo) has for a few years now occupied a rare position in the UK’s electronic music scene. His releases, firstly “Animal Magic” (on Tru Thoughts) and latterly “Dial M For Monkey” and “Days To Come” (on the evergreen Ninja Tune) have established Simon one of the most universally respected artists working today. His humble demeanour and those killer tunes that take in everything from jazz, hip-hop, drum’n’bass, soul and electronica have clubs around the world clamouring for his unique vibe. While Bonobo’s early releases established him as “The king of chill-out”, his DJ sets are renowned as anything but. As you might expect from a guest DJ at Departure Lounge, we’ll get a freestyle set of the highest quality featuring all of the above and more. You might also get some upfront gear courtesy of Simon’s new side-project Barakas, where, alongside Tru Thought’s Rob Luis, he has come up with a couple of dancefloor bombs, mashing up a mix of Balkan beats, bassline breaks and skanking rhythms – now that’s the kind of talk we like round here! Bring it on…
It’s been a long time coming, but we’ve finally managed to put on one of our favourite local acts. Underling are a perfect match up for Bonobo as the live element for this party. Hailing from that cultural hotbed of Dumfermline, their fine brand of jazzy, dubby hip-hop have taken them all over the UK recently, supporting the likes of DJ Vadim, Roots Manuva, People Under The Stairs and so many more. As you might expect then, Underling are one tight unit, combining some pretty virtuoso instrumentation (double bass, harmonica, keys, decks’n’fx, drums…) with Aron Moorhouse’s humble and hard-hitting rhymes. They’ve just released their debut LP on vinyl and CD, to a chorus of nationwide acclaim and are looking now to take things to the next level. We reckon this is the perfect time for their DL debut… welcome boys!
Support of course comes from DL residents Astroboy, Jiminez, Zimmers and Cammy on percussion. This is Astroboy’s last Departure Lounge for a while as he heads off to Cape Town for a wee journey of musical discovery.
