School pupils in Edinburgh offered free film tickets to learn more about human rights

The Edinburgh Film House is offering a free screening of the film The Boy in Striped Pyjamas to schoolchildren in the local area on Thursday 6 November as part of National Film Schools Week.

Pupils from various schools in the
area will have the opportunity to view the film and allow them to
discuss the issue of women's rights - a topic which the film cleverly
explores.

The free screening of this film is
part of a nationwide project by Film Education who organise National
Film Schools Week. This year, Amnesty International is supporting this
season of human rights films and will be hosting a post-screening
workshop to discuss themes and some of the key issues raised in the
film.

Head of Amnesty International UK's Education and Student team, Jo Cobley, said:

"Amnesty International is very
excited to be working with Film Education for the fourth year. I can't
think of a better way to inspire debate amongst young people about
human rights issues than through the medium of film.

"We hope that, through our workshops,
young people can learn about their own human rights and - if they
choose - join us in standing up to protect human rights for everyone."

National Schools Film Week Festival Director, Nick Walker, said:

"The focus of this year's Festival is
‘Discovering Cultures', a theme relevant to school children of all ages
and one that encompasses some challenging themes. The films often look
at these difficult issues through the eyes of young people, which will
excite and entertain students, hopefully engage them and ultimately
enable them to have a greater understanding of cinema culture and the
world."

To reserve a place schools can either
call the National Schools Film Week booking line on 020 7439 4880 or go
to the web site www.nsfw.org.uk.

  • The Boy in Striped Pyjamas will be screened at the Edinburgh Film House on Thursday 6 November.
  • National
Schools Film Week is the biggest event of its kind in Europe and last
year more than 300,000 children attended 2,000 free events, seeing 250
films in over 530 Cinemas throughout the UK.
