A transatlantic collaboration of two modern dance icons to tour ScotlandSpring 2009  Alan
Greig's X Factor Dance Company have teamed up with 'Bessie' award
winning New York choreographer Gerald Casel and his company
GERALDCASELDANCE, for their 2009 spring touring production, Query,
which will premiere at the Brunton Theatre, Musselburgh on 22 January
2009.

X
Factor will tour this hybrid, full-length collaborative work throughout
Scotland in January and February before heading to New York City for
three performances at the Merce Cunningham Studio.
This
passionate, visual, emotional and atmospheric new production is based
on Gore Vidal's novel 'Myra Breckinrdge'. Greig's theatrical and
entertaining style merges with Casel's precise and sensual qualities to
explore gender, sexuality and identity. The result is a battle of the
sexes with a difference - a man becomes a woman and the two
personalities fight for hormonal control of the body with unpredictable
results!
Featuring
specially commissioned ambient and electric music from composer Tom
Murray, Query will fuse Greig's theatrical choreography with Casel's
stimulating direction to create a performance that is dynamic and rich
in texture with strong performances from the talented dancers fused
from both companies.

Alan
Greig, Artistic Director and Choreographer of The X Factor Dance
Company, said: 'Working for so many years, I am always looking to
create new and fresh ideas. Bringing in Gerald Casel and his superb
dancers has brought in a breath of fresh air for the company. We push
each other creatively and we have created something unique, something
that neither of us would have created individually. We are looking
forward to bringing the new work to Scottish theatres and over the moon
for the company to be performing in New York for the first time.'

For
the past nineteen years X Factor Dance Company has been delivering fast
paced and memorable works that confront universal issues with
intelligence and humour. New York choreographer Gerald Casel
(previously Assistant Director of the internationally acclaimed Stephen
Petronio Company) and his company GERALDCASELDANCE create and present
dances that ask questions about human beings - who they are, what they
do and how their actions affect the world in which they live.

Education
is an integral part of X Factor Dance Company's identity and the
company is fully committed to the long-term development of youth and
community dance through workshops and residencies.  In
recent years the company has achieved national recognition for its
education work. The spring tour 2009 will include a college, schools
and youth group education programme with Query and the gender and
sexuality issues it addresses forming the central inspiration for the
dance workshops and curtain raiser productions.

X Factor Dance Company The X Factor Dance Company was formed in 1990 by artistic director Alan Greig.  An
immediate impact was made on the Scottish dance scene with The Guardian
enthusing that the debut show was 'wonderfully refreshing'.  X
Factor has firmly remained as one of Scotland's consistently innovative
and thought-provoking dance companies, enthralling critics and
audiences alike with their unique repertory of work. The
X Factor appeal lies in the ability to communicate with the audience by
confronting real and universal issues with intelligence and humour.  Greig's work is rich in collaboration with writers, lighting designers and specially commissioned sound scores.  His
choreography has explored a wide variety of subjects, drawing
inspiration from movies, music and the complexities of emotional and
sexual relationships.

The
X Factor has an eclectic and inventive repertory of works which
includes Standing Room Only (1992) a high speed site specific
promenade, Sexual (1997) a controversial exploration of gay sex
addiction, Unspoken (2000) a celebratory duet of sensual beauty and
humour, The Dearly Departed (2002), a fascinating look at the various
religious beliefs on what happens after death, Echoes (2004), nine
previous productions woven into a fresh and compelling new performance,
Uncanny (2005), a celebration of the weird and the wonderful and The
After Hours (2006), set in the surreal, mercurial world of dreams.  X
Factor is always alive to change and development and in 2005 invited
its first guest choreographer to create work, internationally renowned
New Yorker Stephen Petronio.  In
2006 maverick black choreographer Colin Poole made Smoke for the
company and in 2007 award-winning French choreographer Philippe
Decouflé made Morceaux Choisis.www.xfactordance.co.uk

GERALDCASELDANCE
creates and presents dances that ask questions about human beings - who
they are, what they do and how their actions affect the world in which
they live. Each dance provokes reflection and implants its imagery into
the viewer's psyche by combining movement and spatial composition with
metaphor.

The
dancers move through emotionally charged landscapes with precise
agility using their muscles, bones and intuition to reveal their
subconscious selves. Dropping hints of narrative while inviting space
for contemplation, the dances deliver multiple levels of interpretation
and meaning.
The
company's creative process strives for inventing new movements and
structures that seek explanations to what humans fear, love and hate.
GERALDCASELDANCE supports collaboration between dance, music, costume
design and technology - mixing performance with recorded and live video
projections to enhance the experience of seeing and feeling dance.

Dedicated
to continuing and disseminating the tradition of dance as an art form,
the company teaches technique classes to dancers as a daily practice as
well as master classes and workshops to communities from all
socio-economic and political strata. Because of this the company
strives to advance dance as a conduit for communication, expression and
personal growth.
