Fri 13th Feb - Trouble with The Unabombers at Cabaret Voltaire

FRI 13th FEBRUARY: ELECTRIC CHAIR SAVED MY LIFE

THE UNABOMBERS (ELECTRIC CHAIR, MANCHESTER)

SCOPE (CHOICE CUTS, DUBLIN)

KID BEL (GOOD FOOT, ABERDEEN)

HOBBES & ERIK D'VIKING (TROUBLE DJs, EDINBURGH)

THE UNABOMBERS

The
Unabombers are so legendary and have played Trouble and Edinburgh as a
duo (their Edinburgh debut was at Trouble back in 2004) and solo
(Justin 'Only Child' Crawford) so many times before, they hardly need
an introduction.  But their Electric Chair night in Manchester, which
closed its doors for the very last time in January last year, was one
of the most widely renown parties to have happened in post-acid house
Manchester, if not the whole UK.

When they started it in a
dirty, sweaty basement  in 1995, it was completely at odds with what
everyone else was doing, eschewing the 'house music all night long'
policy so popular in mid-Nineties British clubs in favour of a more
freestyle play-list, giving residents The Unabombers the freedom to
play a 90 BPM hip hop joint in the same night as a long-forgotten 112
BPM disco obscurity (usually given the re-edit treatment in the studio
first by Justin and fellow 'bomber Luke Cowdrey) and then some future
Detroit techno classic and then playing host to international DJs as
diverse as Laurent Garnier, Joe Claussell, Francois Kevorkian, Carl
Craig, Danny Krivit, Greg Wilson and Andrew Weatherall.  The only
current running through the music was that ineffable quality known as
SOUL.  Hmmm...does this attitude sound familiar at all?  Hardly
surprsing that Trouble, and Edinburgh, should embrace the Unabombers so
warmly each time they play here.

The Unabombers, 'Electric
Chair Saved My Life' is out now (Tirk) and chock to the brim with more
classics than you would put in a box and flog down the car-boot,
including The Human League, Metro Area, Faze Action, Roy Davis Jnr,
ESG, Isolee, Daniel Wang, Pepe Braddock and Chaka Khan.  The
Unabombers, you see, are future-retro, too.  Are you?

DJ SCOPE & KID BEL

On
co-support DJ duties in Trouble's back room, it's something of a
meeting of Celtic minds, or perhaps that should be a meeting of Celtic
souls, as we welcome back long-time Aberdeen Troublemaker Kid Bel (last
seen warming up the Trouble crew alonsgide Aberdeen cohort Martin Jay
at our former Assembly Bar residency in Old Town some two years ago)
and Dublin's own passionate disciple of the soul/dance cause, DJ
Scope.  Bel's Aberdeen residency, the Good Foot (at the Tunnels) see
him spinning everything from 'retro to future Soul, Hip Hop, Jazz,
Broken, Afro, Funk, Latin, Reggae, House and Disco' - in a nutshell
'all that good shit!' - while a glance at Scope's myspace reveals his
Irish sessions have a similar flavour.  With all this sounding very
Troublesome to our ears, we're expecting healthy beats from these boys
in our back room and no mistake.

HOBBES & D'VIKING

New
developmets in the Trouble DJs' camp include Hobbes ending up in The
List's Hot 100 at the end of 2008 (for his work with Trouble, Limbo,
New Idols and Black Spring), and then spending a very colourful and
entertaining Hogmanay DJing first at a club night in Farringdon,
followed by a hedonistic all-night affair in Hackney, down in London,
while d'Viking's Saturday Night Fish Fry sessions continue to go from
strength to strength and are now very firmly established at the city's
salubrious Jazz Bar venue (doing much better under the independent
stewardship of owner Bill Kyle, having thankfully regained its true
soul and a loyal local following once again).  The Trouble DJs continue
to DJ in bars and clubs all over Edinburgh and beyond on a regular
basis, but their flagship Trouble nights at Cabaret Voltaire are among
the few occasions they get to really let rip with the music they
love.
