Photographer exposes hidden glamour of Edinburgh nightlife

Showgirls,
burlesque dancers and king crooners. Anyone could be forgiven for
thinking that the latest exhibition by Edinburgh-based, award-winning
photographer Ryan McGoverne is set in 1950's New York. Not so. McGoverne's exhibition ‘SHOW', opening on Tuesday 24th March 2009, is a documentation of performers and performance right here in the capital.

Featuring
just a handful of performers from Edinburgh's fringe, McGoverne has
preferred to focus his third solo show on a selection of the city's
other year round cultural offerings. All taken in Edinburgh
within the last 12 months, singers, bands, dancers and showgirls are
captured in the heat of performance, candidly backstage or posing for
the lens. From members of the burgeoning Scottish burlesque community
to Scottish bands Glasvegas and the Twilight Sad, the works are vivid
and exciting bursts of flamboyant activity, occasionally countered by
moments of calm reflection.

McGoverne's
exhibition heralds the return of Edinburgh's own king crooner, Craig
McMurdo, who personally requested Ryan's imagery to accompany his
ten-week, residency at Leith's Compass Bar.

‘SHOW' will run from Tuesday 24th March 2009 until Tuesday 26th May 2009 at Compass Bar, 44 Queen Charlotte Street.
Leith EH6 7EX. Open daily from 10am to 11pm and until 1am on Friday and
Saturday. Craig McMurdo will perform at 7.30pm and 9.30pm every Tuesday
night until 26th May 2009. Entry free.
