Departure Lounge 6th B-Day Bash ft. Diddley Squat, Samba School & Much More @ The Caves

Yes yes, we are proud to announce that Edinburgh’s global music
institution Departure Lounge is celebrating 6 years in the business in
July. It's been a great year for us with top shows like DJ Vadim,
Souljazz Orchestra, our legendary Hogmanay Special, Samba Ya Bamba,
Bonobo, Nostalgia 77 and more. It is this dual commitment to quality
and variety that have kept the people coming back for more every time,
and kept us enthusiastic for every night we put on, even after all this
time. So come along, join our family and celbrate with us. It's easy
really, just turn up, turn over some coins, and dance.

Our
birthday parties have always been low-key in terms of guests compared
to our other dates, because we keep things local and friendly and fun
that’s why these have been some of our favourite nights.

This
time round we will be seeing a rare headline set from our resident DJ
team, Astroboy, Jiminez & Mr Zimbabwe. The boys have been at the
helm of the club since day one and have always known best what records
to drop for their home crowd. It’s impossible to sum up the kind of
music you might hear from their record boxes, but I’d be fairly sure on
some afrobeat, Latin-tinged drum’n’bass and breakbeat, dub-wise, jazzy
beats, good-time soul/funk and some choice mash-ups. It’s the kind of
open-minded musical mix you simply won’t find anywhere else.

The
boys will be releasing the latest additional to their annual mix CD
series “Departure Sounds Vol. 5” on the night too – handed out for free.

On
the live tip, we’ve managed to get a band that has been tearing up the
local festival circuit over the last couple years. Diddley Squat may
come over as a ramshackle bunch of drunkards, but then you listen to
the sublime music emanating from their homemade
soundsystem-on-a-shopping-trolly, then you start to dance, and then you
find yourself swinging like a monkey in the treetops! This
Newcastle-based 8-piece blend reggae, dub, funk and gypsy music in such
an intoxicating cocktail that crowds clamour wildly for more wherever
they play. The closest comparison I can think of is Cat Empire and
Black Seeds – sounding good? They will rip it up and no mistake.

We're
also happy to have our favourite band of party starters to help kick
things off in fine style. The Edinburgh Samba School are a 15-piece
batacuda monster waiting to break free...pure carnival vibes in the
place!

The infamous Impractical Clothes Tuck Shop will also be catering for your sugary needs.

So
there you have it – another Departure Lounge milestone comes and
goes…our next dates are early October (big guest!) and then our
traditional-not-traditional Hogmanay hoot.
