evening with Robert Burns'
.

Meet Allan Smith who was born and raised in Ayr, only 2 miles from where Robert Burns was born. From a young age
he recited Burns' poetry and
performed songs written by the poet.

He studied in Wales and Cambridge, before travelling to Milan to study singing with Giovanna
Canetti.

Prizes won include the Sir Geraint Evans Scholarship
Competition and Philip Jenkins Memorial Scholarship. He appeared recently as Guglielmo in Cosi Fan Tutte in London. 
Other roles include Aeneas in Dido
& Aeneas
, Enzo in Sweetness and
Badness
for Welsh National Opera and Shaunard in Puccini's La Boheme in the Anghiari Festival, Italy.

On the concert platform he has sang Vaughan Williams' Serenade to
Music
with the Philharmonic Orchestra, Carmina
Burana
with Birmingham Royal Ballet and Vaughan
William's Sea Symphony with the
Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.  He has
performed recitals in Westminster Cathedral, Oxford and Edinburgh. 
This year he gave the world premiere of Doors of Sleep by Gerald Busby. He has broadcast music of Bernstein
and Elgar live on BBC Radio 3 and CD recordings include Britten's Rejoice
in the Lamb
with AVIE. (AV2072).

Future plans include recording songs of Adolf Jensen
with pianist, Sholto Kynoch.

He frequently delights audiences with his
interpretations of the songs of Robert
Burns
, and has given talks on this most
celebrated poet of
Scotland. Allan will be performing this illustrated
talk
here at Blackwell including some much anticipated songs and poetry.

delighted if you will join him at the **Canongate Kirk on Wednesday
26th August, 2009 at 7.30pm for a concert of traditional and classical
settings of
Robert Burns, where he will be joined by pianist, Sholto Kynoch
(Artistic
Director of Oxford Lieder).
