One Fine Day….Northern Streams Festival Concert Extra! 7.30pm, 12 September 2009, The Lot, Grassmarket

Submitted by ELTMSA on Wed, 9 Sep '09 10.50am

Performers at a sold out concert earlier this year, will be returning for their only Central Belt gig with winners of two recent music awards.

The original trio - Calum Stewart (Scottish flute), Daniel Carlsson (Swedish Saxophone) and Heikki Bourgault (Breton guitar) played to a capacity audience at the Northern Streams Festival in April. This time, they are joined by winners of two Danish Folk Music Awards 2009 – fiddler, Hal Parfitt Murray and keyboard/accordionist Nikolaj Busk – to form the group called ‘One Fine Day...’

Northern Streams Festival organiser, Fiona Campbell, “I’m really pleased we’ve been able to arrange this extra concert so quickly as this will be the only chance people down here will get a chance to see these guys, coming fresh from three dates up north. I’ve heard them all play live in some way or another and they are all great musicians in their own right but even more amazing when combined.”

The initial concert in April came about after a chance meeting backstage at a Polish festival last year between Fiona and Calum when she found out he had been working with colleagues in Sweden and Denmark. This made a perfect fit for the Northern Streams Festival she organises which brings together music, song, dance and storytelling from Scotland and Scandinavia.

“I would say they play a fusion of traditional, jazz and chilled music, but you will also get a chance to hear different combinations over the course of the evening concert – so I think it will be an experience not to miss again!” continued Campbell.

Emerging as a leading instrumentalist in contemporary European folk and world music, Calum Stewart is establishing his unique style along the way, the sound of his Wooden Flute being fundamental to this. Combining the search for fresh, new and innovative music with a deep commitment to tradition, Calum was raised on traditional music in his native Morayshire.

"Calum is a musician who manages to combine the search for fresh, new and innovative music with a deep commitment to tradition." Rob Adams (The Herald)

Hal Parfitt Murray: Violin, viola, vocal & Nikolaj Busk: piano, harmonium, accordion (Denmark)

Hal and Nikolaj" won two Danish Folk Music Awards 2009 as "Debut of the year" and "Composer of the year"!

Scots-Australian Fiddler Hal Parfitt Murray and Danish Pianist Nikolaj Busk have made a band. A band which is at once a toy-shop, a garden shed, a saw-dusty workshop, a playground, a party and a pot to grow things in. Their music is deep and dark and clamouring and gentle and euphoric and bright as a fire burning under the ice and hot and black as an old plane-crash in a deep Pacific jungle. It is the sum of the stories of long travels in red and stony deserts, green, pearly islands of white smiles and colourful snakes, sweltering golden summer fields coddling around sheds of mad pigs, and smoggy, violent cities where the trash drifts like snow. It is the music of odd and wonderful people met, loved and lost again, and of sighs and smiles and grass, seaweed and scuba diving.

"Sometimes it's just pure magic coming out of the loudspeakers."

"This is simply a one of a kind debut."

"It's unbelievable that two musicians should have achieved such a high standard at so young an age. -******"

"Busk goes straight to the top of the international league for piano-drivers" - Andrew Cronshaw, fRoots

Nikolaj was also Instrumentalist of the year at Danish Folk Music Award 2008 and has worked with many artists including Natalie Haas and Svøbsk who featured at last year’s Northern Streams Festival.
