by Kenny Mathieson

(12 Oct -20 Nov)

Institut Français d'Ecosse

13 Randolph Crescent, Edinburgh EH3 7TT

The French Institute is
pleased to present an exhibition of magnificent shots by local Edinburgh photographer
(and member of the French Institute)
Kenny Mathieson.

The exhibition primarily
features a selection of Kenny's work from the
2009 Edinburgh Fringe and WOMAD Festivals. Kenny has photographed the Edinburgh Fringe for over twenty years,
capturing both street and stage scenes in equal measure.

In 2006, Kenny won 2nd place in the Edinburgh Evening News
‘Yell About Edinburgh' photography competition.

Also in 2006, he won 1st place in the National Galleries of
Scotland/Scottish Sun, ‘Harry Benson' photography competition and
was able to meet the legendary
Scottish photographer (and one of his photographic heroes) as a result. On
seeing some of Kenny's work, Harry Benson told him, "You have a
great eye."

In 2007, he won 3rd place in the Black & White
category of Digital Camera Magazine's ‘Photographer of the Year 2007' competition (which attracted
over 81,000 worldwide entries) and his prize-winning entry (an Edinburgh Fringe
shot which also appears in this exhibition) was exhibited in The Mall
Galleries, London.

In 2008, he was on the final shortlist in the
Urban category of Digital Camera Magazine's ‘Photographer of the Year 2008' competition (which attracted
over 120,000 worldwide entries).

Kenny was invited to
photograph this year's WOMAD Festival at Charlton Park
by Richard Chappell (Peter Gabriel's sound engineer), having met him
while photographing ‘Children of the
Khmer' at the 2008 Edinburgh
Fringe.

In 2008 and 2009, he has
been one of the official photographers
at The World Festival (co-produced and directed by Fringe regular, Toby Gough)
at St George's
West. Several shots from the 2009
World Festival feature in this exhibition.

His major photographic
passions are for stage/concert/festival photography. He has had work published
in: The Scotsman; Edinburgh Evening News; Scottish Sun; The Guardian; The
Times; The Mail on Sunday; The Daily Telegraph; Classic Rock; and Songlines.

In 2008 one of
Kenny's shots featured on the
‘Ain't No Saint' CD box set by John Martyn.

In November 2009, three
of Kenny's photos will appear on the
‘Glitter & Doom Live' CD by Tom Waits.
