Halloween - Trouble's (live) Party For The Undead: Asazi Space Funk Explosion, Gecko 3, Melvitronica

It's a very special addition to this Autumn's Troublemaking, as we announce our Live Party For The Undead at the Voodoo Rooms on Saturday 31st October, with a couple of live favourites from Erik d'Viking's Saturday Night Fish Fry residency (Jazz Bar), that's Asazi Space Funk Explosion and Gecko 3, plus a wild card from up Trouble's sleeves in the shape of Melvitronica.

ASAZI SPACE FUNK EXPLOSION

ASAZI SPACE FUNK EXPLOSION formed in Camden, London in 2003 but are now based part-time in Edinburgh and part-time in South Africa, where singer Kholeho “Asazi” Mosala comes from. With his rabble-rousing vocals and traditional percussion plus UK-born Alex Marten’s spacey, dubbed-out keys and skanking guitar fx now joined by Caz Anthony (drums) and Andy Farina (bass), they blend traditional African vocal stylings and marimba (wooden xylophone) with cutting edge, 21st century sounds and a tight, funked up rhythm section. A string of legendary, packed-out gigs at Edinburgh’s Jazz Bar, Bongo Club, Left Bank, Outhouse, Forest Café and at the Knockengorroch Festival in Dumfriesshire have brought them a loyal Edinburgh fan-base, not quite sure what they were hearing but wanting more of this strange, other-worldly funk and Asazi’s powerful, magnetic personality and irresistible, treacle-rich voice.

Taking influences from everything from Fela Kuti’s afro-funk, the heaviest, deepest Jamaican dub, raw tribal rhythms and sonic experimentalism for the modern day dance-floor, their sound veers from heart-wrenching melodies to unhinged percussive work-outs to thumping, booty-shaking rock-out rhythms. What explodes on stage is an inter-planetary mix of afro-celtic, space-funk lunacy, vibrant with a mélange of musical and cultural influences not attributable to any one place, time or solar system, but welcoming all to the dance with open arms. Asazi Space Funk Explosion… this is revolution.

GECKO 3

GECKO 3 are an Edinburgh-based 'groove' trio who formed in 2000, with Marty Philip (vocals/guitar), Paul Gilbody (double bass) and Hugh Martin (drums). Their music mixes hip-hop, latin, funk, reggae and jaaaazz. They have performed in the US and mainland Europe, in addition to regular UK gigs in venues from London to Skye. Highlights include the legendary Ronnie Scott’s in Soho (with Brit Award Winner KT Tunstall as guest vocalist) and London’s Kashmir Klub (as KT’s backing band – Marty and Paul also sang backing vocals on KT’s Mercury nominated album ‘Eye to the Telescope’). Other notable dates include support slots for Roy Ayers, the Quantic Soul Orchestra and Spanky Wilson, Nizlopi, Cibele, Finland’s Five Corners Quintet and Edinburgh's own renegade international stars The Cuban Brothers, plus shows at world-class Parisian venues L’Olympic and La Fleche D’Or, touring the Gallic countryside as part of the Brussels Jazz Marathon and stand-out performances for evergreen Edinburgh club nights Departure Lounge, Motherfunk and everyone's favourite Jazz Bar session, the Saturday Night Fish Fry.

MELVITRONICA

MELVITRONICA is the brainchild of Adam Melvin, taking inspiration from as far afield as old skool computers and arcade games, classic rock, reggae, funk and soul. It's safe to say that the sound of hip hop and its world-class turntablists wield the biggest influence over Adam's work, though, as he cuts up and programs his beats with the precision of a ninja, both on stage and in the studio. DJ Shadow is an obvious touchstone, too, while Adam's live show sees him work the wax as well as the midi programs and various instruments, including kazoo, loud-hailer, flute and keyboards/synth, with plenty of humour, no lack of skill and equal parts showmanship. It's a lot of fun and a bit of a rarity. Don't miss it!

HOBBES & D'VIKING (TROUBLE DJs)

In over seven years of hosting the capital's Radio 1 award-nominated Trouble club night (formerly at Cabaret Voltaire, originally Trouble At The Bluenote) and holding down other residencies all over Edinburgh and beyond (Hobbes is a regular DJing feature at the ace Slabs Of the Tabernacle party in Glasgow), the Trouble DJs have also toured the globe, from tiny sweat-boxes in London to super-clubs in Shanghai and Beijing, Rob Da Bank's massive Big Top tent at Bestival to wee hot-spots in Warsaw, Sardinia, Vienna, Paris, Berlin, Derry, Ghent, Zadar and Belgrade (not to mention other UK festivals, the Big Chill, T in The Park, Knockengorroch and Secret Garden). They know exactly how to rock the party and always recognise a good groove when they hear one, no matter what musical pigeon-hole people are stuffing it into this week. Expect a suitably 'ghoulish' play-list from them on the ones and twos!
