Alternative winter celebrations for adults at the Scottish Storytelling Centre

Festive Fun for adults offers entertaining alternative winter celebrations.

Step into the Scottish Storytelling Centre, sheltered from the biting cold, to forget the pressures of Christmas spending, with convivial and relaxing storytelling events that explore a traditional Scottish winter.

Storytelling Café: Fire and Ice

Now a popular monthly event, the Café is a fun evening showcasing storytelling as entertainment, offering the chance to discover a genuine taste of rich Scottish culture. Fine tales and fine company combine in the Centre’s festive atmosphere, where regular guests and visitors to the city can contribute in this offbeat and enjoyable evening with a tale, poem or song, or just sit back, relax and enjoy. Edinburgh’s Ron Fairweather hosts December’s Storytelling Café on Wednesday 9th, and will be exploring hot and cold tales as the elements battle it out during the winter months.

Yule Night

What could be more festive than a hearty story over a cup of delicious mulled wine and a helping of scrumptious mince pies? Yule Night is held at the Scottish Storytelling Centre on the cusp of the midwinter solstice, on Thursday 17th December, which brings together the richness of traditions and tales surrounding the Yule season and the depths of Scottish midwinter. Gather at the hearth of Scotland’s ancient storytelling traditions, for a journey into history, myth and imagination. Warming Yuletide stories are presented by event host Donald Smith, with promising yarns of Shetland shanties and northern tales, from Fife-based raconteur Judy Paterson and Shetland’s Lawrence Tulloch. Judy and Lawrence will be joined by Shetland violinist Danny Jamieson who will be providing festive fiddle music. Yule Night embraces ballads, stories, music, food, and wine in the same ticket, promising to be a one-off night to remember and a guaranteed darkness-buster.

Guid Crack: Yule Night

Appropriately named storyteller and harpist Heather Yule is the special guest tale weaver at December’s Guid Crack event on Friday 18th December. Hosted by Donald Smith, drop into The Waverley Bar on St Mary’s Street and find a jovial gathering of storytellers, singers and listeners enjoying a pre-Christmas tale or two along with their pints. This seasonal night of stories will perfectly round off a merry, story-filled December.
