A new book on Edinburgh's history is Historic Walking Guides Edinburgh. It covers a number of walks through the city, and each walk is themed on a different part of town. It even covers areas further afield.
The concept of a travel guidebook covering the historical aspects - which let's face it, most people cite as a big reason for visiting Edinburgh - is quite original and I found this to be quite an informative book.
You can follow the map at the start of each walk and read about the important historical buildings along the way, and read stories of their past.
