Leith Life Stories Ensure Memories Are Remembered, Shared and Created

Life Stories is a group of professional storytellers who specialise in storytelling in providing tailored storytelling and reminiscence sessions to older people in a range of settings, from hospitals and day centres to lunch clubs and church groups.

The aims of Life Stories are rooted in providing quality, inclusive arts activities for older people and their carers.

Life Stories aims to:

  • provide older people and their carers with opportunities for participation in quality, inclusive arts activities

  • recognise, value and affirm older people's memories, life experiences and contribution to the wider community

  • use storytelling and reminscence to entertain, combat loneliness and isolation, and provide opportunities for socialising and conversation

  • use storytelling and reminscence to rekindle imagination, trigger memories and increase communication

  • to build confidence and motivation, and combat feelings of depression

From February to May this year, members of the group will be visiting older people's groups in the Leith and Leith Walk areas of Edinburgh to tell stories from past and present everyday life, and hear some of their stories and memories over a good cuppa!

As part of the project, we are also running two community storytelling events on 12 March at the Scottish Storytelling Centre and 16 April, as well as a 'Life Stories and Reminiscence' skill development workshop for professional staff, carers, volunteers and storytellers working with older people on 24 April.
