World Press Photo 2010 Exhibition At the Festival of Politics

World Press Photo 10 Exhibition   At the Festival of Politics

3rd. To 28th. August at The Scottish Parliament in Holyrood. FREE

The 2010 World Press Photo (WPP) exhibition in the main foyer at Holyrood is an annual event during the Summer Recess. WPP hold an annual competition accepting, this year over 100,000 entries, all from professional photojournalists. Its the premier annual international competition in press photography.

The Holyrood exhibition features this years prizewinning photos from 62 photographers and audiences are cautioned that many of the images are deeply upsetting, a message I missed before viewing.
Many photos are of the dead , and by the nature of the competition, the most effective ones are truly grisly. A dead child's head protrudes from a bombed house in Gaza; an adulterer is stoned to death in Somalia. Don't expect to eat in the cafe after viewing.

The horrors of war are also the subject matter of the disabled US veterans photographed back in America. In war we are all victims.

Sports photos provide light relief and nature, in particular photographic evidence of climate change, displays the power of an image to command world attention.

The winning photograph by Pietro Mastuzo is of Tehran women standing on house roofs and shouting their opposition to the presidential election of last Summer.

There's also a special mention for a non-professional image that shook the world. Tehran and the presidential election is again the location. This one's a still screen grab from the camera-phone video of a girl, Neda Ahga-Soltan, shot dead during protests against the result; another disturbing picture.

The WPP exhibition is of the best of world photojournalism. Don't miss it.
