Scotrail's Travel Advice for Rugby Fans

ScotRail is urging rugby fans and customers to allow even more time than usual for their train journeys on November 13 and 20 because of the EMC Autumn Tests at Murrayfield Stadium.

Network Rail's ongoing £10m project to electrify Haymarket North tunnel meansthat people wishing to travel by train to Edinburgh from Stirling, Dunblane and Alloa will have to change onto another train - or bus - at Linlithgow.

Fife trains will terminate and start at Haymarket station instead of Edinburgh Waverley.  And Fife Circle services are also affected by separate engineering improvements.

Queuing systems will be in place at key stations and extra ScotRail staff will be on hand to assist customers.

A ScotRail spokesperson said: We will do all we can to get everyone to and from Edinburgh, but are also asking travellers to help us by setting off in good time.

People should be prepared to queue for longer than they normally would on rugby days, particularly at Glasgow Queen Street, and at Haymarket after the match. And we would urge travellers to buy their tickets in advance, not on the day.

Customers can also travel to Edinburgh on the Glasgow Central via Shotts service.

Scotland plays New Zealand on November 13 before taking on South Africa the following Saturday  with the matches kicking off at 1715 and 1430 respectively.

Those planning to travel on the two dates should visit www.scotrail.co.uk for more details on how their journeys may be affected.

Network Rails electrification work is part of the £1bn, five-year Edinburgh-Glasgow Improvement Programme which will deliver more frequent, faster journeys to a range of destinations cross the central belt by 2016.

More details of the service alterations for Haymarket North Tunnel engineering works in connection with the Glasgow to Edinburgh via Airdrie and Bathgate rail link which opens on 12 December are as follows:

Alloa / Stirling /Dunblane - Edinburgh services will start/terminate at Linlithgow, connecting into Edinburgh/Glasgow Queen Street services.   An additional bus shuttle service will operate from Linlithgow to Haymarket between 1300 and 1600 hrs in one direction only.

Edinburgh / Fife Circle & Dundee Services will start/terminate at Haymarket, connecting into services to/from Edinburgh

A separate service will operate between Edinburgh and Newcraighall.  Frequent services will operate between Edinburgh and Haymarket to connect with Fife Circle/Dundee services.

All other services running to/from Edinburgh are subject to minor re-timing.

The Edinburgh-Glasgow Improvement Programme is being funded by Transport Scotland on behalf of the Scottish Government. It is expected to deliver a range of benefits by 2016 including a fastest journey time of 37 minutes on the main Edinburgh Waverley-Glasgow Queen Street route and increased service levels on all routes between the two cities from the current five or six services per hour to 13 services per hour. The programme will also provide opportunities to increase services and reduce journey times on routes between Alloa and Dunblane and Edinburgh and Glasgow.
