About the venue

The Gordon Aikman Lecture Theatre (formerly the George Square Theatre until 2018) is a large modern theatre within Edinburgh University's central campus on an elegant Georgian Square.

The main theatre has a capacity of 481, state-of-the-art lecture facilities, a large reception area with space for catering or bar set up.

Edinburgh University runs the venue year round as a lecture theatre year during term and also as one of Edinburgh's key venues for large-scale theatre, musicals and dance (particularly during the festival) as well as lectures, film screeings, and talks.

Following refurbishment in 2007, the theatre returned to the Edinburgh Festival in 2008 as the Edinburgh Fringe's first dedicated venue for musical theatre with new and classic musicals across three performance spaces.

The theatre was renamed from the George Square Lecture Theatre to the Gordon Aikman Lecture Theatre in 2018 after the young business man and graduate of Edinburgh University's Business School who raised raised £500,000 towards research into motor neurone disease.
