The Tolbooth Tavern, at the lower end of the Royal Mile, by the Canongate Kirk, is steeped in centuries of history.
The original Tolbooth building was built in 1591 to collect tolls and was the main public building of the Canongate burgh.
It was a hub for merchants, a courthouse, a grim jail and meeting place of the town council.
A tavern, first established in 1820, now occupies the ground floor of the 16th century tolbooth. The building is also home to The Peoples' Story Museum.
The cosy bar offers popular staples such as Cullen skink, burgers, fish ‘n’ chips and the steak and sausage pie.
The bar caters to those looking for trad Scots food such as MacSween’s haggis, neeps and tatties, served with a local dram of whisky.
It also hosts live folk, Scottish food tasting platters, whisky tastings and walking tours.
