A short film about the Garvald Centre bakery has won a $75,000 (£46,400) award at the Middle East International Film Festival in Abu Dhabi.

The 11-minute Breadmakers was made by Yasmin Fedda last year. Fedda knew the Gorgie bakery well, having previously worked there part-time. It was produced by former Edinburgh Filmhouse director Jim Hickey and Robin Mitchell on a budget of £8000, less than a fifth of the cash prize that comes with its Black Pearl Award for Best Documentary Short Film.

The Garvald Centre Bakery, which is staffed by people with learning disabilities, has earned a deserved reputation for producing some of the best daily bread in Edinburgh. The film shows the bakers at work making organic bread each day for delivery to Edinburgh shops and delis.
