Downton Abbey style dining in the West End

A new concept in eating out has just opened its freshly painted doors at the West End of Edinburgh in this quaint, quiet cobbled street lined with fashion and gift boutiques. Here you will find The Mulroy, a smart, intimate restaurant where the emphasis is on fine dining with classic, classy service.

Down a few steps from the pavement into the club room which houses the cocktail bar. Beyond are two homely dining rooms, painted a soft shade of ochre. Antiques abound - a 17th century elm settle, stag antlers, landscapes, historic art work, tweed, hand painted porcelain, silver candlesticks, crystal glasses and traditional cutlery - it’s all reminiscent of a Country House or Shooting Lodge in the Highlands.

The club room is a cosy place to sit for a pre-dinner flute of bubbly and study the menus. Both the A la Carte and (low priced) Petit Menu offer a superb choice of classic French/ Scottish cuisine: Woodland pigeon and foie gras, Borders Lamb and broad bean stew, Saddle of Rabbit, Seabass with braised rhubarb, creamy leeks, saffron potatoes and Avruga caviar, North Sea Cod “Brandade” and Wild mushroom, girolles and baby artichoke Risotto with a poached egg, the yolk, drizzling over the savoury rice. To finish Crème Brulee, Apple Tart Tatin, or excellent cheese board. And of course to complement the food, a list of fine wines which are decanted, where appropriate, into cut glass decanters.

The ethos is about bespoke, classic service. It’s all very new with exciting developments in the pipe line for the Autumn and Festive season. Coming soon, cocktails and Tapas. Call in for lunch, pre-theatre supper, a romantic dinner for two. For a special occasion, book the elegant private room for your own dinner party with friends, served by a tail-coated butler.

At this Uptown location at The Mulroy, expect a touch of Downton Abbey Edwardian glamour and old fashioned style with contemporary, theatrical flair.
