Under glorious warm sunshine, the 7th Made in Scotland annual Fringe programme was launched in Edinburgh’s Royal Botanic Gardens on Wednesday 20th May.
Marco Biagi, Minister for Local Government and Community Empowerment and Edinburgh MSP, announced the 21 companies and artists that will take part in this year’s programme - a curated showcase of music, theatre and dance made and produced in Scotland and performed during the world’s biggest arts festival, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
Marco Biagi said, “This year’s Made in Scotland programme of Scottish theatre, dance and music is an opportunity to showcase the incredibly rich and diverse range of performers and companies Scotland has to offer.
“A number of the projects launched at last year’s festival have since toured the world and been performed in places as far afield as Brazil, New Zealand, Egypt and Australia. These connections are putting Scotland’s rich heritage on the map and boosting our international reputation.
“The Scottish Government’s £590,000 investment into this year’s programme will build on 2014’s strong track record and will deliver even more exciting, memorable and moving performances to audiences from around the world.”
There is a strong international flavour in this year’s programme with work from major companies including Stellar Quines’ trilogy of works starring Maureen Beattie who was nominated for CATS Best Actress in 2013 with The List that was the CATS 2013 Best Production winner, The Carousel, and Deliverance by Quebecois writer Jennifer Tremblay; Silver Darlings, a song cycle which sees world renowned writer Alexander McCall Smith join forces with composer James Ross; Vanishing Point’s stunning exploration of ageing and being cared for, Tomorrow , a major international co-production with partners in Moscow and Brazil, and Scottish Dance Theatre’s YAMA , which draws on rituals practiced in the mountains of Japan. Scotland’s award winning young playwrights, Stef Smith and Gary McNair premiere their new work and the music programme offers Indian inspired world sounds from Simon Thacker and a new work considering the actions of Edward Snowden from composer Matthew Collings, all evidence of the wealth and diversity of work being created in Scotland.
