Edinburgh and Gardening
Scotland have
joined forces to celebrate Scotland's outstanding natural larder and
meet demand for the surge in popularity of a ‘grow your own' approach to food.
The two events will take place in Edinburgh from Friday 29th - Sunday 31st May, and organisers
are urging gardeners and foodies alike to make the most of the advice and
inspiration available at both events.
The trend for growing your own and
locally sourcing foods is sweeping the nation, as everyone from TV chefs to
everyday cooks become more aware of the advantages of fresh, homegrown
produce. Anyone intrigued by the latest
food trends will find nowhere better to be than in Edinburgh next month as two major events
will provide all the advice and tips you need to get started.
Taste of
Edinburgh, this year
taking place in scenic Inverleith Park, will showcase Scotland's finest food and drink producers
and inspiring demonstrations from Scotland's top chefs will leave you eager
to get home, get planting and get cooking.
With renowned chefs Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and Jean-Christophe
Novelli, along with a host of local Scottish talent including Nick Nairn and
Tom Kitchin, guests can learn the best way to make the most of fresh seasonal
ingredients.
Carina Contini
will be showcasing restaurant Centotre's fine fare at Taste of Edinburgh this
year. She offers some advice on simple
starting points for beginners and explains that even those short of space can
get growing.
Carina
explains; "One of the easiest ways to
get started is to grow herbs at home.
It's so simple to do; yet fresh herbs can transform a recipe. As well as for cooking, they can also be used
as remedies or to make therapeutic teas such as rosemary, cinnamon, lemon
and orange tea which is a great digestive.
"You only need to start out with two or
three herbs such as basil and rosemary, and add them to dishes for a really
fresh flavour. It's so satisfying to be
able to think you have truly made something from scratch."
Gardening
Scotland is Scotland's national celebration of gardening and outdoor living. The
show is held at the Royal Highland Centre, Ingliston, from 29th - 31st May, when experts and exhibitors can set you on the right path to getting ready to grow, from sewing your
seeds to nurturing your plants, to picking your produce at the optimum
time.
Whether you're growing hearty vegetables in
your garden, planting in pots or simply nurturing herbs in your window box,
there's a chance for everyone to get involved.
Those inspired to put their green fingers to the test can find out just
what to make with all the fresh fine ingredients at the Taste of Edinburgh festival.
STV's Five Thirty Show favourite,
Pete Jackson, Director of local food market Earthy will appear at this year's
Gardening Scotland as part of the Big Back Garden feature. Pete says;
"At Gardening Scotland we're
going back to the land - highlighting how a garden should be - a place for
entertaining but that also provides food for the family. At these times we're all more conscious of
where our food comes from and we want to show people how they can grow their
own food. Scotland
leads the way with some of the best food and we're here to celebrate that."

Taste of Edinburgh
Taste of Edinburgh raises
the curtain to a series of the nationwide food and drink festivals across three
cities in the U.K. - Edinburgh, London and Birmingham. As well as sampling
cooking from the best culinary talent in the country, festival goers will be
able to eat and drink from up to 100 speciality food and drink suppliers who
will all have stands at the event sampling and selling Scotland's
products.
Partnered with VisitScotland, Scottish Enterprise and The
City of Edinburgh Council, Taste of Edinburgh 2009 will
provide a culinary experience that will give 25,000 foodies at the
scenic Inverleith Park, with the opportunity to sample "taster dishes" from 14 of Edinburgh's
top restaurants, as the chef's work for three days
in their on-site demonstration kitchens.
