Lauriston Castle is set in 30 acres of parkland and formal gardens with spectacular views overlooking the Firth of Forth.
A 19th century mansion built around a 16th century tower house, the Castle has been home to a number of notable Scots and provides a snapshot of life in an Edinburgh middle-class home at the beginning of the 20th century.
It was entrusted to the care of City of Edinburgh Council in 1926.
There are tours (check web site) throughout winter and summer months.
The grounds are open 8am close 8pm in summer. As well as woodland walks, Lauristan Castle has an award-winning Japanese garden. Admission is free.
