Tickets to Edinburgh's Hogmanay Street Party are set to increase to £15 this year, after Hogmanay celebrations went £250,000 over budget last year.

Councillor Steve Cardownie, Festivals and Events Champion for the City of Edinburgh, said: "Last year's event was an award-winning success, generating a massive £24m for the city's economy. However, there was an overspend of £240,000, which the Council as underwriter was required to meet."

Last December, Edinburgh Trams organisers tie had to scramble to get Princes Street open in time for the Winter's Festivals, and the Hogmanay festival itself took place in a cold snap, but Hogmanay events went ahead as planned.

The Hogmanay events also took place over five days - an extra day more than usual - as part of the Scottish-government sponsored Homecoming Scotland year.

In 2010/2011, Edinburgh's Hogmanay events will take place over four days, with the higher ticket price of £15 rather than £10 planned for the street party.

"This year, we're proposing a street party administration fee of £15, which will help us to bring this event in on budget while also providing improved levels of entertainment on our street party stages. There will also be an early bird £10 rate for the first 5,000 passes sold. Although this is a rise from previous years, we believe it represents fantastic value for money for partygoers, who will see in 2011 with an unrivalled carnival atmosphere, top bands, a stunning fireworks display and arguably the most spectacular backdrop in the world."
